Associate of Science Degree in Fashion Design

The Fashion Design associate’s degree program offers creative opportunities to transform design ideas into garments and accessories. Students are introduced to basic skills of construction in sewing, tailoring, flat pattern drafting, and draping to provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of apparel engineering. Design courses emphasize the principles and aspects of good design, and the drawing and illustration techniques essential for design communication. Further training increases students' conceptual experiences, enabling them to take an idea from the planning stage through the construction process to the finished garment.

Students study computer-aided design and hone their creative problem-solving skills through a variety of design challenges. The faculty nurtures creativity and teaches hands-on skills using traditional tools as well as industrial equipment similar to that found in the fashion design field. The combination of professional skills and technical knowledge help students prepare for entry-level positions as a junior designer, pattern grader, or as an assistant in the design or production departments.

The objective of the Associate of Science in Fashion Design degree program is to provide students with a foundation of knowledge and skills together with performance standards of industry practices and applications found in the apparel and textile industries. Students engage in both conceptual and applied coursework as well as hands-on technological applications.

The Associate of Science degree in Fashion Design is a 7-quarter program containing 112 credit hours (including 28 credit hours in Liberal Studies courses) and can be completed in approximately 2 academic years. Program classes include Fundamentals of Construction, Fashion Illustration, Computerized Patternmaking, and Apparel Marketing. Students use tools and software such as PAD, Microsoft Office, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop.

Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Fashion Design

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design degree program offers creative opportunities to transform design ideas into garments and accessories. Students are introduced to basic skills of garment construction, flat pattern drafting, and draping to provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of apparel engineering. Design courses emphasize the principles and aspects of good design, textile design and development, and the drawing and illustration techniques essential for design communication. Further training increases students' conceptual experiences, enabling them to take an idea from the planning stage through the construction process to the finished garment.

Advanced courses provide students with the opportunity to focus upon surface design and select a professional direction in men's, women's, children's, or accessory design.

Associate of Science Degree in Fashion Marketing

The Associate of Science in Fashion Marketing degree program teaches students how to use textiles, color, and design to create visual merchandising campaigns. Business courses teach students how to develop, analyze, and implement effective sales strategies. They learn how to use computers for cost analysis, inventory control, and other store operations; and are instructed in the basics of merchandise economics, leadership skills, manufacturing, and store planning.

The objective of the Associate of Science in Fashion Marketing degree program is to offer students skill building in design, business, digital, and industry-relevant areas as a means of preparing for entry-level positions.

Many students combine what they learn in the classroom with hands-on experience through part-time jobs and internships. In addition, students learn marketing promotion, buying techniques, and retail management. They will graduate prepared for entry-level positions in retail or wholesale sales and management, and as consultants and stylists for clothing wholesalers and manufacturers.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Fashion Marketing and Fashion Management

The Bachelor of Science in Fashion Marketing & Management degree program is rich in theory and practice. The focus on theory and the history of this industry at the beginning of the program articulates the guiding principles that provide the foundation for the hands-on application of design concepts. Students will develop abilities in the foundation aspects of the fashion design process. They will quickly move to the founding principles of marketing, advertising, merchandising, and management. They will learn how the profession interfaces with others and how to manage the business of their profession. They will develop aesthetic and ethical sensibilities over the course of the program.

The objective of the Bachelor of Science in Fashion Marketing & Management degree program is to combine the broad cultural knowledge and critical-thinking skills of the liberal arts education with emphasis on the creative, technical, design, and business capabilities in order to foster the relationship between knowledge and application, theory, and practice.

Upon graduation, students are prepared to seek entry-level positions in the industry such as management trainee, assistant manager, visual merchandiser, manufacturer's representative and assistant merchandise buyer. After gaining professional experience, graduates may qualify for more advanced positions in management and merchandise buying. Some graduates eventually work independently as consultants or open their own businesses.

Admissions

As an applicant to California Design College, you must demonstrate proof of high school graduation or its equivalent prior to receiving final acceptance. Your high school transcript or GED transcript is required.

You will also be interviewed, either in person or by telephone, to explore your background and related interests in correlation with the program offerings.

In addition, you must independently conceive and write an essay on two of three of the following questions as explained in the Application for Admission.

Each applicant's academic transcript and completed essay will be evaluated by the Admissions Acceptance Committee. The committee determines the compatibility of the applicant with the programs at California Design College and ultimately makes the final decision regarding acceptance to the school.

The committee reserves the right to request additional records of accomplishments in core academic courses and/or the results of any nationally-based examination such as the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College Test (ACT) prior to making this decision.

A separate Application for Admission and Enrollment Agreement must be completed and signed by the applicant and parent or guardian (if the applicant is a minor). The applicant should include official high school and college transcripts with proof of graduation at the time the application is submitted. Consideration for admission will be based on a review of the applicant's essay, academic performance, and admissions interview. A portfolio is preferred, but not required.
