International Fine Arts College
Miami, Florida

International Fine Arts CollegeThe ambition of the course is that its graduates should go out into the world as highly competent and creatively confident people, with a breadth of knowledge of the industry and equipped with intellectual skills as well as practical and specialist ones.

As the fashion industry is extremely competitive, it is necessary to prepare students in the skills necessary to position themselves as favorably as possible to enter the fashion market. Students learn to take their ideas from their illustrations and bring them to life. From drafting the pattern, draping and cutting the fabric, to the construction and presentation of their final line, students are provided the instruction and assistance they need from our distinguished faculty. When the students' new lines are completed, a panel of industry professionals provides critiques as models exhibit the new creations -- during the Annual Senior Fashion Show -- on a carefully prepared runway before the press, invited international designers, industry executives, family, and friends. Imagine the excitement when the lights go down and the music begins! More important, imagine how significant this education -- preparing for a "real world" fashion show in a major fashion capital -- can be for a student fashion designer launching his or her career.

Fashion Merchandising

Visual Merchandising is one of the courses stressed at IFAC. It is the science and art of using one's imagination and creativity: as well as one's understanding of lighting, design, consumer psychology, and marketing principles to create a mood in a retail store or mall for the consumer to make purchases. Visual merchandisers also design and construct stage sets for fashion shows, and plan and assemble window and floor displays in many kinds of retail establishments. The industry requires people with the skills necessary for visual merchandising, and so students leave the fashion merchandising program thoroughly prepared for this interesting career. Fashion styling - another hot career for fashion merchandisers - also plays a significant role in IFAC's curriculum. Students learn to work on catalog, magazine, and newspaper layouts, while going on locaton with photographers, stylists, models, and editors.

Fashion styling dovetails nicely with the activities and field trips throughout South Florida which broaden the educational experience of IFAC's fashion merchandising students. From the exclusive shops at Bal Harbour to the boutiques of Miami's South Beach, students have the opportunity to meet and learn from people who are leaders in the fashion industry. Guest lecturers from leading fashion magazines and major stores provide the chance to learn from key fashion industry leaders. Students also work backstage at fashion shows seeing how professionals such as Isaac Mizrahi, Josie Natori, Nicole Miller, Sonia Rykeil, Carolina Herrera, Tommy Hilfiger, and Oscar de la Renta rehearse and produce their shows. Indeed, South Florida, home to major centers of the contemporary fashion world, provides the IFAC student with the perfect backdrop for learning fashion merchandising.
