School of Fashion DesignThe School of Fashion Design was established in 1934 and is the only educational institution in Massachusetts dedicated exclusively to the study of fashion design. A curriculum has been developed that stresses a solid foundation in traditional techniques, addresses the technological demands of the contemporary market and remains innovative by evolving with the industry.

At the School of Fashion Design in Boston, you'll learn inspiration, design, construction, detail, accessorization, and presentation.

As the fashion industry is extremely competitive, it is necessary to prepare students in the skills necessary to position themselves as favorably as possible to enter the fashion market. Students learn to take their ideas from their illustrations and bring them to life.

SFD offers exclusive curricula in the applied art of fashion design.

SFD emphasizes apparel classic as well as innovative; preparing students for "The Industry" (ready-to-wear/mass production), The Boutique (limited editions) and the Haute Couture (exclusive custom design) aspects of fashion.

SFD offers full and part time study, day and evening schedules in individual subjects as well as certificate/diploma programs. A student also enjoys the convenience of commencing study in September (fifteen week fall semester), January (fifteen week spring semester) or June (ten week summer session).

Fashion Design

The Fashion Design program begins with learning the basics through academic study and hands-on instruction. You'll learn by doing. In addition to a broad selection of liberal arts courses, you'll study all facets of fashion design.

The Fashion Design program helps new designers acquire the necessary skills to develop their personal style. Students also become familiar with the business and marketing side of the apparel industry.

International Applicants

Instruction at SFD is in English and a mastery of the language is necessary. This school is authorized under Federal Law to enroll non-immigrant alien students. International students in need of via processing (I-20 form) are required to prepay their first academic year's full tuition (ten courses/two semesters) and first year's required supplemental fees, supplies textbooks and kits. Students are also required to present credentials in support of financial feasibility to live at least one academic year in Boston (sufficient funds for housing, food and other necessities). SFD reminds international students that normally they may not be employed while in this country.

Head Start on Style: Program for High School Students

The School of Fashion Design offers a program for the next generation of young designers, the High School Prep Program. Offered throughout the year, this program provides high school students a nurturing environment to test their interest in fashion, explore their talents and get a jumpstart on their dreams. The course includes fashion art and clothing construction. It is offered twice during the summer session and once during fall and spring sessions.
